Physical Education
KS3 Curriculum
Assessments
Assessments are based on students’ ability to achieve within 3 key areas. These are: motor competence (knowledge of the range of movements that become increasingly sport- and physical activity-specific), rules, strategies, and tactics (knowledge of the conventions of participation in different sports and physical activities), and healthy participation (knowledge of safe and effective participation).). These are designed so students can cumulatively build their subject understanding and performance levels in a wide range of activities over time. These get progressively more challenging during the key stage and build upon prior learning. Knowledge recall and ability to orate and apply key tier 2 and 3 language forms part of these termly assessments also.
Key Themes/Topics Year 7
Students will cover 2 activities each term from a variety of activities, e.g. football, netball, basketball, rugby, rounders, cricket, softball, badminton, gymnastics, health-related fitness, and athletics. Students build upon the physical development and fundamental skills covered at primary school. They are encouraged to become more confident, competent, and refined in basic physical skills, while being introduced to wider roles within sport.
Key Themes/Topics Year 8
Students will cover 2 activities each term from a variety of activities, e.g. football, netball, basketball, rugby, rounders, cricket, softball, badminton, gymnastics, health-related fitness, and athletics. Students focus on developing the skills and techniques of current activities/sports to a higher standard and progressing these in competitive/aesthetic performances. Students work on their ability to work as an effective performer and are encouraged to take a leadership role during the warm-up or skill activities. As a result, students become more confident and competent performers.
Key Themes/Topics Year 9
Students will cover 2 activities each term from a variety of activities, e.g. football, netball, basketball, rugby, rounders, cricket, softball, badminton, health-related fitness, and athletics. Students develop their use of strategies and tactics in competitive situations. They are encouraged to analyse their own and others’ performance and consequently develop greater knowledge and understanding of how to progress at the same time experiencing different roles.
KS4 Curriculum
KS4 Core PE: At key stage 4, students participate in two lessons per week in year 10 and one hour per week in year 11. This enables students to continue to refine their performance and enhance their involvement with other roles within sport. Students are offered a varied curriculum which builds upon prior learning whilst also introducing new sports for students to adapt their skills towards. Students are provided with the opportunity to choose certain activities to participate in, with the hope this will assist in our students becoming lifelong participants in sport and physical activities. Students are not provided with attainment grades within Key Stage 4 PE due to this not being an examination-based subject. Students are instead assessed on their ability to continue to show high levels of effort and behaviour.
